You can choose from different plants to place in your rock gardens. Depending on the site of you rock gardens, the weather conditions, and the temperament of the plants will help make your decision. If you have your rock gardens in a wooded place and maybe a stream of water, you may want to go with mosses or ferns. If your rock garden is in a hot area with not a lot of shade then you may want to consider cacti. Also, if it is a natural garden, make note of the types of plants already growing at the site, you may want to stick to those and just add on.
Most importantly, you should research on which plants grow best around the soil where the garden is and the kind of rocks in the garden. If you plant a fern that is not compatible with the soil then your rock garden will not be successful or look exquisite because now you would have dead ferns.
